2018 is the Year of the Dog

Chinese New Year will begin this year on Friday 16th February to Friday 2nd March, its the longest holiday in the Chinese calendar.

Families will gather to exchange gifts, normally giving red envelopes stuffed with “lucky money” and are given to children, along with written wishes for their kids to grow up healthy. However with the new digital age, there are red envelope apps where people can exchange cyber money online.

Chinese New Year is an opportunity to celebrate a new start, millions of people world-wide join in the fun. families will celebrate with the ringing of bells, fireworks and watching traditional lion dances.

 

 

Each year is designated by a different symbol from the Chinese zodiac 12 animals, with this year being matched to the 11th sign, Year of the Dog.

The Dog is the symbol of loyalty and honesty. People born in the Year of the Dog possess the best traits of human nature. They are honest, friendly, faithful, loyal, smart, straightforward, venerable and have a strong sense of responsibility.

 

 

Celebrate the Lunar New Year at City of Sydney’s Chinese New Year Festival. With a vibrant program bursting with cultural events, markets, tours, exhibitions and entertainment, most of them which are free.

Be a part of the fun as the city’s streets come alive with giant Lunar lanterns and more. Don’t miss the popular Dragon Boat Races that see the spirit and power of the dragon come alive as 12 metre long boats, with up to 20 paddlers, battle it out to the beating of drums.
